BPC-157 And Angiogenesis: One Lab Behind Most Of The Data

In cell culture BPC-157 had no direct angiogenic effect. In injured rat muscle and tendon it up-regulated VEGF and produced a more organized vascular response, a pattern the Zagreb group describes as angiomodulation rather than angiogenesis.

What was studied

Brcic, Sikiric, Seiwerth and colleagues asked whether the healing effects reported for BPC-157 are explained by new blood vessel formation. They combined endothelial cell culture with three rat injury models and stained the healing tissue for VEGF, the endothelial marker CD34 and factor VIII.

What the data shows

  • BPC-157 did not stimulate angiogenesis directly in cell culture.
  • In crushed muscle and in transected muscle and tendon, treated animals showed VEGF up-regulation and a more adequately organized vascular response during healing.
  • The authors concluded that the angiogenic potential of the peptide is tied to the healing process in vivo rather than to an intrinsic pro-angiogenic signal.

A 2014 review by the same group in Current Pharmaceutical Design summarizes the vascular findings across nitric oxide, VEGF and focal adhesion kinase pathways and describes BPC-157 as an "angiomodulatory" agent.

Read with care

Almost the entire BPC-157 literature, including this paper and the review, comes from one university group in Zagreb. Independent replication is scarce, and there are no controlled human trials. Treat the mechanism as a well-described hypothesis.

Why it matters for research

The paper matters because of what it rules out: BPC-157 is not a simple VEGF mimetic. Laboratories designing angiogenesis assays with this peptide should expect an injury-dependent, context-dependent effect and plan controls accordingly.
